Kent Island Mechanical was formed to meet the mechanical subcontracting needs of general contractors, building owners, engineering firms, and other construction professionals in the Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia commercial markets. Our firm specializes in projects of all sizes in markets such as Healthcare, Life Sciences, Information Technology, Federal, Institutional, Educational, and Hospitality industries. Kent Island Mechanical is dedicated to building lasting relationships with our construction partners and understands the “teaming effort” required to meet the challenges of the complex structures being built today. We are a signatory contractor with Locals 602 Washington, DC Steamfitters, Local 5 – Washington, DC Plumbers, Local 486 – Baltimore Plumbers and Steamfitters and Local 11 – Washington, DC; Maryland; and Virginia Laborers. We are a member of the Mechanical Contractors Association National, State, and Metro Washington Chapter, and are affiliated with many of the building trade organizations and enjoy teaming and developing new techniques to accomplish the work through ongoing collaborative efforts. Our teams have over 200 years of combined experience in design assist, design-build, plan & spec for projects of all sizes and complexity. We welcome the challenges that today’s high-tech industries require and enjoy relationships with the best and brightest subcontracting and vendor support the industry has to offer.

Key Personnel

Mark E. Bowen

President

Mr. Bowen has over 25 years experience in the design and installation of critical mechanical systems. His early career was spent working with several prominent consulting engineering firms in the Baltimore area; Henry Adams, Inc and Mueller Associates. With these firms, Mr. Bowen was responsible for the design and layout of mechanical systems to support the overall design of the project. In 1992, Mr. Bowen left the design side of the industry to start a new business in the Testing and Balancing trade. As Vice President of Precision Balancing Inc., Mark worked hand in hand with designers, fabricators, installing contractors, vendors, and commissioning professionals to gain valuable hands on knowledge and understanding of the true requirements needed to complete a mechanical systems project from conception to completion. In 2002, Mr. Bowen left the Test and Balance industry to form Kent Island Mechanical, but still holds his license as a NEBB certified Test and Balance Supervisor and Commissioning Agent. As President of Kent Island Mechanical, Mr. Bowen oversees the daily operations of the company and works with MEP consultants and engineers to provide “turn key” mechanical systems solutions to Kent Island Mechanicals clients.

Kyle Benjamin

Director of Operations

Mr. Benjamin is a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Law and Minors in Statistics and Sociology. He has over 20 years of construction management experience and currently serves as our Director of Operations. His combined experience from 8 years as a key manager on our Special Projects team as well as prior experience as the Production Manager of a general contracting firm have helped him build a broad knowledge base allowing him to support our various departmental needs while overseeing the daily operations. Mr. Benjamin holds a US Army Corp of Engineers CQM certification as well as being lead safe certified, holds his OSHA 30 certification, and maintains an up to date JCO training.

Frank

Frank Weis

Lead Estimator

Frank has 38 years of experience in the Mechanical and Construction Industry. His experience with the HVAC and Plumbing Industry is primarily focused on Life Sciences, Biotech Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Hospitals, Higher Education and Large Central Utility Plants. Frank has past experience managing another Commercial and Industrial Mechanical and Plumbing Construction Company and their entire $60 million dollars per year operation. Frank has extensive experience in building systems analysis for energy savings paybacks and performance contracting. Frank received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University in 1985 and resides in Bethesda, MD.

Steven Weiss

Controller

Mr. Weiss has over 10 years of experience in accounting and serves as the senior accountant. Prior to working with Kent Island Mechanical he spent time working in public accounting with Ernst & Young; Regardie, Brooks & Lewis; and Citrin Cooperman where here specialized in the audit and assurance practices for both public and privately held companies. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Maryland College Park and an MBA from University of Maryland University College.

Construction Services Division

Kevin Gaver

Senior Project Manager

Mr. Gaver has over 32 years experience in the mechanical trades and has worked with several prominent mechanical contractors in the Washington, DC – Metro area. Mr. Gaver has knowledge and experience of major projects with Mechanical and Plumbing contract values in excess of 15 million dollars. His resume consists of many projects including over 50 schools, many multi-story buildings and tenant fit-outs as well as numerous projects for the National Institutes of Health. Since joining the company in 2005, he manages large scale projects along with his project engineer and superintendents. Mr. Gaver holds an OSHA 30 certification as well as current JCO training.

William Koch

Senior Project Manager

Mr. Koch is a motivational contributor with more than 25 years of leadership experience from multiple fields of profession that provides diversity to the team. William spent many years in the hospitality industry as a Professional Chef and worked through the levels of Hospitality Management, which developed his foundational value of customer service, training others, and mentoring staff. He holds a Bachelors of Business and Entrepreneurship, a Culinary Arts Degree, an MCAA Certificate in Project Management, an MCAA Certificate in Advanced Project Management, an OSHA 30 Certificate, VRV Installation, VRV Commissioning, and Start-Up. William transitioned into the mechanical trades industry by attending Steamfitters Local 602 Apprenticeship, where he completed and received an HVAC Journeyman License. He more recently received a Maryland Masters HVAC Contractor License. William gained mechanical and plumbing project management experience at another Mechanical Services company leading several hundred-thousand-dollar projects to multimillion-dollar projects. Since joining our team, William has been a Senior Project Manager with a dedicated project management team that oversees Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Projects ranging from small renovations to large building expansions.

Tom

Tom Sullivan

Senior Project Manager

Tom has over 25+ years’ experience working in the commercial HVAC and plumbing industry in the greater DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) region. For the last 2+ years, Tom has been working as a Kent Island Mechanical Sr. Project Manager leading the construction of a U.S. FDA (United States Food & Drug Administration) drug evaluation and research facility and several other research laboratory projects. Prior to Kent Island Mechanical, Tom worked on numerous large VRV systems for institutional / school projects in the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. Previously, Tom was a Vice President and Sr. Project Manager at another mechanical construction company specializing in Biotechnical, Pharmaceutical, and existing Central Utility Plant work for 19+ years. Projects included FDA Validated GMP manufacturing facilities and various clean room labs and research facilities, such as the SAIC Vaccine Pilot Plant, Human Genome Sciences, Clean Rooms at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Novavax, and ACell. Tom and his team won the prestigious 2005 Star Award from the Washington Building Congress for the installation of 9,000 tons of chilled water cooling at Georgetown University’s central utility plant facility. Before his construction experience, Tom worked as a Sales Engineer at Boland Trane. Tom received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University in 1992 and resides in Bethesda, MD with his wife, Ellen, daughters Molly and Maggie, and son Tommy as well as their Portuguese Waterdog Auggie.

Special Projects Division

David Tyler Jr

Senior Project Manager

Mr. Tyler has over 18 years of experience in the Mechanical trades and currently oversees all Special Projects Division work. Mr. Tyler’s special projects team completes a myriad of different projects from small renovation and repair work to large scale system overhauls. In his daily activities he manages and coordinates his staff to successfully complete all work within the Special Project Division while maintaining the flexibility to visit repair and design-build style projects to provide cost estimates and mechanical knowledge as needed. Mr. Tyler is LEED AP BD+C certified, as well as being Green Advantage Commercial certified. He also holds a US Army Corp of Engineers CQM certification along with OSHA 30 certification as well as current JCO training and Masters Licenses in Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC in MD, DC and VA.
